Once there was a miller who was very poor and who had a beautiful daughter.
One day, he went to speak to the king and said, "I have a daughter who can spin straw into gold." The king replied to the miller, "Bring her tomorrow to my palace, and I will put her to the test."
When the girl was taken to the king, he took her into a room which was full of straw and said, "If by early tomorrow morning you have not spun this straw into gold, you must die."
The miller's daughter had no idea how straw could be spun into gold and she became more and more frightened until at last she began to weep.
At that moment the door opened, and in came a little man who said, "What will you give me, if I do it for you?"
“My necklace,” replied the girl.
The little man took the necklace, seated himself in front of the spinning-wheel and began to work.
At daybreak, when the king saw the gold he was delighted. He had the miller's daughter taken into another room full of straw, and said, "You must spin this, too. If you succeed, you shall be my wife."
When the girl was alone, the little man came again and said, “You must promise me the first child you have after you are queen, and I will spin the straw for you again."
The girl did not know what else to do so she promised the little man what he asked for, upon which, he began to spin until all the straw was turned into gold.
When the king arrived in the morning and found all as he had wished, he took her hand in marriage and the pretty miller's daughter became a queen.
A year later, she brought a beautiful child into the world, and started to think no more of the little man.
One day, the little man suddenly came into her room and said, "Now give me what you promised."
The queen was so upset and started to cry, so the little man took pity on her.
"I will give you three days," he said. "If by that time you find out my name, then you shall keep your child."
The queen spent the whole night thinking of all the names that she had ever heard.
She sent out a messenger who travelled far and wide to find out what other names there might be.
On the third day, the messenger came back again and said, "I came to a high mountain at the end of the forest. There, I saw a little house.”
In front of the house was a ridiculous little man who was jumping around and singing: "I am so glad that nobody knows…That the name I am called is Rumpelstiltskin!"
Very soon afterwards, the little man came in and asked, "Now, mistress queen, what is my name?"
At first she replied, "Is your name Conrad?"
”No."
"Is your name Harry?"
"No."
"Perhaps your name is Rumpelstiltskin?"
"The devil has told you that! The devil has told you that!” cried the little man. In his anger he was jumping up and down so much that his feet plunged deep into the earth and his whole body was swallowed up and never seen again.
