Description
Dancehall music is a traditional genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the 1980s. Initially, dancehall music was a version of reggae full of "space", as opposed to the roots style, dominant in the island's music scene. The mid-1980s, the instrumentation became dominant, changing the sound considerably, characterizing dancehall (or "ragga") by increasingly rapid rhythms. In the mid-1990s, with the rise of various BoboShanti-linked dancehall artists such as Sizzla and Capleton, a powerful connection developed between dancehall and Rastafarian culture.
Dancehall music has been criticized by international organizations and different personalities for its violent and sometimes homophobic lyrics, although the lyrical theme of dancehall goes beyond violence.
