USMLE Step 1
USMLE Step 1 is a one-day test that is often taken at the end of the second year of medical school. It emphasizes the key concepts of the foundational sciences fundamental to the practice of medicine such as basic sciences, including anatomy, biochemistry, behavioral sciences, microbiology, immunology, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology. All the Step 1 questions are multiple-choice.
USMLE Step 2
USMLE Step 2 exam is a two-day long and often taken in the fourth year of medical school. It has two sections. The first section is a multiple-choice test called Clinical Knowledge, or CK that gauges your knowledge on clinical sciences like surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics, and gynecology. The second section is called Clinical Skills, or CS that requires you to examine and diagnose actors posing as patients. Candidates have to travel to one of five testing centers around the country to take the Step 2 exam.
